Volunteer With LCARES Today

Help your neighbors when it matters most. We provide emergency communications support to the Lyon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue — and you don't need a ham radio license to get involved.

Membership Tiers

LCARES welcomes volunteers at every level. You don't have to live in Lyon County to join.

General Requirements

All prospective members must complete the ARES Registration Form and pass a background check. You'll also need to complete a personal interview with the Emergency Coordinator, attend one business meeting and two training sessions, and be voted upon by the general membership. Members under 18 require written parental consent.

Additional Requirements
  • Regular and Full Members must hold a valid FCC amateur radio license (any class: Technician, General, or Extra).

  • Full Members must also complete FEMA ICS courses (IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800) and attend CPR & First Aid training.

Free FEMA Training

These free online courses are required for Full Membership. Each takes 2-4 hours and can be completed at your own pace.

  • IS-100.c — Introduction to Incident Command System

  • IS-200.c — ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents

  • IS-700.b — NIMS: An Introduction

  • IS-800.c — National Response Framework, An Introduction

Next Steps

Once you've reviewed the requirements above, contact our Emergency Coordinator (Patricia Polish) to schedule your personal interview. Bring your completed application form to the interview, and we'll guide you through the rest of the process.
